One evening last winter Barb Norwood was grazing her horse just north of the road. Her horse stepped through the turf and discovered a sink hole. She contacted me. I went out the next morning and removed the turf to see how big the hole was. At the top the diameter was approximately 3'. It appeared to get a little larger as it went down. It measured about 8' to the top of the pipe and eleven feet total. Upon observation it appeared that a small tunnel was heading towards the road. I dug some more to get a better view. This is what I saw:

At this point I decided to excavate to the pipe to find the source of the sink hole and to see if there was anything I could do to mitigate any further damage. I put a couple of logs next to the road to form a barrier and put up a temporary fence around the sink hole.
I had 15 yards of drain rock brought in and began trying to excavate with my Kubota. Barb Norwood brought hers over and assisted. Mark Holland assisted by shoveling by hand from around the pipe. At some point I realized the Kubotas couldn't complete the task so I rented a track hoe.
I proceeded until I was able to reach the area of the sink hole. The bottom of the galvanized pipe was missing and the water was running out. I dug around this area and added some rock to guide the water back into the pipe. That was pretty much it until the area dried out this summer. In August I removed the PVC pipe. I thought I would cut off 4 to 5 feet of the galvanized pipe because this would get me as close to the asphalt as I felt safe and I thought that would get me to solid pipe so I could reconnect the PVC. After I removed the cut piece I discovered that the rusted out bottom continued as far as I could see. I took pictures and contacted three contractors./font]
